New role, new media

Val Morgan has appointed Matt Tremain to the role of New Zealand cinema sales director.

Tremain joins Val Morgan with over 20 years of media experience having worked in TV, digital, radio, publishing and experiential. He most recently held the sales director role at MediaWorks Auckland and prior to that was advertising director at Bauer Media NZ.

Val Morgan sales director Tristan Wyse says it’s thrilled to have a media professional of Tremain's calibre join the team.

“As we move into a more data-focused future for cinema, his experience across various screen platforms together with his leadership credentials will be invaluable for connecting advertisers to the cinema audience.”

Commenting on his new role, Tremain adds that there could not be a better time to be working in cinema.

“The power of the big screen has never been more real with cinema one of the only remaining environments to deliver attentive and engaged audiences.”

In taking on the role, Tremain replaces Suzie Lamborn who has resigned. He commences the role in January next year.

A trio of appointments

Motion Sickness has three new members in its team: Damian Golfinopoulos, Anna Maxwell and Tara Ryan.

Golfinopoulos joins from MediaWorks, and will work in content post-production. At MediaWorks, he was a news video editor.

Maxwell and Ryan both join as social strategists/creatives.

Moving on

The Edge DJ Jay-Jay Harvey has announced she will be leaving the station after 23 years with it.

Harvey started at The Edge when it was founded in Hamilton in 1994 and says the decision to leave has been massive and life-changing.

“I’ve been at The Edge for more than half my life and I feel very ready now to move on. I really want to thank all the amazing, hardworking and talented people I’ve worked with at The Edge over the years and especially give a big thanks to our incredible and supportive listeners.  I’m looking forward to some time away and will be ready to welcome the next phase of my MediaWorks radio career in 2018 – watch this space!”

While there is no word on that new role will be, Leon Wratt, group content director of music, says he’s had the privilege of working with Harvey since the early days of The Edge where she took the station from a regional audience of 15,000 to 650,000 listeners across the country.

“Her longevity with The Edge Breakfast is testament to that and she’s leaving the station at the very top of her game. We acknowledge that it’s time for Jay-Jay to have a break and move on to a new chapter and we look forward to her joining the wider MediaWorks radio family next year.”

Harvey will remain on air with The Edge Breakfast until just before Christmas. From Monday 27 November, Megan Annear will be joining The Edge Breakfast team and she will take over the hot seat next to Dom Harvey and Clint Randell when they launch their show on The Edge in early 2018.

An injection of creativity

Fish has a new director team on its roster, with Anthony Mathile and Stacey Lee joining.

Lee, a former creative at Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand, went on to work on the global Adidas account at 180 Amsterdam and then Mother New York. She has picked up awards at all the major shows and ranked ninth in the world at the Young Guns Advertising Awards.

She directed her first independent documentary in 2010, One Fire Ignites Another, and moved to the production side in 2012 first as a creative director and producer developing branded content and show formats at Vice, then independently for major brands, including Absolut, Smirnoff, The New Yorker, Spotify, Tanqueray and Beats by Dre. She was recently shortlisted for the Cannes Young Directors Award and was one of five new female directors selected as part of the DGA/ AICP Diversity showcase in 2017.

Mathile started his career on tour as a band videographer and documentarian for six years with The Rolling Stones and other stars before returning to New York and entering to commercial directing making global spots for brands like Bacardi, Visa, Beats by Dre, Merrell and Samsung. 

Having worked together since 2012, Lee and Mathile’s style can be described as doco-style, cinematic, photo-real work, talent-driven with a strong narrative element to everything they touch. Their short film, Live Fast Draw Yung, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival in 2015 and went on to play globally (including the NZIFF) and pick up two Best in Show awards in Atlanta and Tacoma. 

They split their time between New York, Los Angeles and Mount Maunganui.

Taking the lead

Cloud accounting company Reckon has a new business development manager in Nicholas Ogilvy.

Ogilvy brings expertise in technology and B2B Marketing and will work closely with Reckon’s existing partners, as well as driving sales and building relationships with new partners.

Prior to joining Reckon, Ogilvy held key management roles at BlackBerry ANZ and most recently, marketing and business development roles at Inside Marketing UK.

Reckon general manager Catie Cotcher says that experience across technology and B2B marketing will be key to continuing the growth of Reckon’s partner network.

“It’s an exciting time to be an accountant at the moment and having someone like Nick, who has experience in bringing businesses and technology together, will be hugely beneficially to our partners wanting to reach their full business potential.”
