New year, new role

Newstalk ZB has announced Kate Hawkesby will be joining its crew next year to host Early Edition.

Hawkesby has always had an affiliation with the station, having worked on The Mike Hosking Breakfast, Saturdays with Jack Tame and Andrew Dickens’ Sunday Café, and says she is looking forward to being back and hosting her own show.

NZME head of talk Jason Winstanley says Hawkesby will be an outstanding addition to the station’s line-up.

“Kate’s energy and candour radiates through the speakers. She is the perfect fit for Early Edition and there’s no question she will deliver the very best in news, opinion and commentary.”

In taking on this role, she will be taking the place of Rachel Smalley, who is leaving journalism to pursue a corporate career.

Hawkesby’s first day on Early Edition will be 22 January.

A new job title

Steffan Panoho has been appointed head of tourism at Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED).

The appointment sees Panoho move from his current role as manager of trade partnerships (tourism) at ATEED, a role he has held for the past six years.

During his time at ATEED to date, Panoho has led the development of world-class tourism trade marketing and premium visitor attraction strategies for Auckland, which have delivered significant growth in high-value visitation to the region.

Steve Armitage, ATEED’s general manager destination, welcomes Panoho’s appointment.

“Steffan’s understanding of tourism product development and marketing, and passion for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, makes him a great fit to lead ATEED’s work in attracting visitors to the region.”

Panoho adds: “Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is a place that I’m incredibly passionate about, and I want to bring the people, culture and stories to the forefront of how we promote the region to visitors.”

He replaces former head of tourism Jason Hill, who left to peruse his own business interests within the sector.

The communications connoisseur

Vector has a new head of corporate communications in Richard Llewellyn.

Having taken on the role in September, the move saw Llewellyn leave his role as head of corporate communications at Spark, a company he’d worked with since April 2013.

Prior to joining Spark, he worked in senior communications roles at Auckland Airport and was general manager of CPR New Zealand.

The creator of content solutions

Multimedia sports entertainment company ESPN has announced the addition of Rita Steel as the New Zealand sales manager to the newly aligned Disney ESPN Media Sales and Partnerships team.

Steel will be based in Disney ESPN’s offices in Auckland and will report to Nik Weber, head of sales at Disney ESPN Media Sales and Partnerships.

She brings over 13 years’ experience managing global brands, having managed Viacom’s Portfolio and more recently she was part of the foundation team that launched Pandora Internet Radio. Throughout her career, Steel has built a reputation for delivering innovative and effective solutions for agencies and their brands and highlights include The NZ Comedy Roast of Mike King with Freedom Farms, the NZ Super Sweet 16 with Clean and Clear (CAANZ Finalist) and the Holden Spark Artist Sessions (Gold CAANZ).

Steel specialises in integrated and branded content solutions and looks forward to bringing brands and audiences together in her new role at Disney ESPN Media Sales and Partnerships.

“I am excited to unlock these fantastic brands to advertisers here in New Zealand. There are so many opportunities to leverage this premium global content through local partnerships and connect with audiences through the creation of branded content.”

Weber adds: “I’m thrilled to have someone of Rita’s calibre leading our Media Sales and Partnerships team in Auckland. With well-established audiences across our television and digital networks, having a key point of contact on the ground to provide meaningful insights will allow our partners to maximise the effectiveness of their advertising.”

Taking the lead

APN Outdoor has announced the appointment of James Warburton as chief executive officer for Australia.

Effective as of 22 January 2018, Warburton will bring with him 16 years’ experience in CEO roles, including Ten Network Holdings, Universal McCann and most recently V8 Supercars Australia. He was also a director of Eye Corp, Ten Network’s out-of-home media business.

In addition to his CEO experience, Warburton also has more than 20 years’ experience in marketing and sales leadership roles at Seven Network, Yahoo! 7, DDB Needham and McCann Erickson. This included eight years as chief sales and digital officer at Seven Group with responsibility for the sales function across Seven Network, Yahoo!7 and Pacific Magazines.

APN Outdoor chairman, Doug Flynn sees Warburton’s appointment as a key step in the company’s continued growth trajectory.

“We are excited to have James join as APN Outdoor’s next CEO. He brings to the company extensive executive leadership experience, with a significant understanding of complex media environments including out-of-home media, dealing with key advertisers and media agencies, developing new income streams, and dealing with technological change and digital disruption.”

Flynn also thanks Wayne Castle for his contribution as interim CEO. Castle will revert to his previous role as CFO upon Warburton’s commencement with the group.

About his new role Warburton says: “I am extremely excited to be back in the media industry, a sector I am passionate about. APN Outdoor has a strong reputation for innovation in the out-of-home industry, demonstrated by its leadership position in digital roadside billboards in Australia and its leadership in New Zealand via the strategic use of data to enhance the value proposition of out-of-home for advertisers.”

The change in leadership across the ditch does not affect the business here, with Mike Watkins remaining at the helm.
