Clive Ormerod hangs up on Spark, joins Les Mills International

Spark’s general manager of customer and marketing, Clive Ormerod, is set to depart the company and take on the CMO role at Les Mills International.

He will finish up at Spark at the end of March to take on the new role 1 April.

Ormerod joined Spark two and a half years ago from Nike, where he held a number of key senior commercial and marketing roles across a seven-year stint. The move to Les Mills will see him return to the sport and fitness industry he says is a big part of his life.

“I think Les Mills has a really clear mission which is creating a fit planet,” he says. “And helping people fall in love with fitness in some form is something that really resonates with me and something that is a big part of my daily life.”

But that doesn’t mean the decision to move was made lightly and Ormerod says it was one made with head and heart.

He has loved being part of the Spark family and feels like the team is really “just getting started” on the brand and commercial journey—a feeling that’s reflected in the projects he’s rolled out in the last couple of years.

Following his arrival, Shine was confirmed as a key strategic partner and Colenso BBDO was appointed as its above-the-line brand agency.

Those partnerships then came to light in the emotive ‘Big Tony’ campaign, which sits alongside a flurry of brand and sponsorship activity including Spark taking on the naming rights of Spark Arena; forming partnerships with Netflix, Spotify, The Spinoff and Auckland City Limits; completing the final Boroughs project; and launching the ‘Little can be Huge’ brand platform, which included a brave father’s day campaign

Last year also saw Spark shift its media account from Dynamo to PHD.

About the move, a Spark spokesperson told StopPress that Ormerod has made a great contribution to the brand during his time.

“His work in positioning our brand has seen us go from strength to strength … The good news is that Clive leaves behind an incredibly strong marketing team at Spark. Our commercial and brand performance continues to go from strength to strength, with our performance the strongest we have seen for some time.”

Ormerod is just as complimentary about the team he’s built, saying that’s what he’s most proud of from his time.

“I feel like I have the privilege of going from one great New Zealand business and organisation to another. Spark is very much a business and brand that everyone in New Zealand knows and I think Les Mills is another awesome New Zealand success story.”

There is no news yet about a replacement.

Ormerod’s departure comes soon after the news that Jason Paris, the chief executive of home, mobile and business and a chief architect of the brand transformation from Telecom to Spark, was departing to take on a senior role overseas early this year.
