Movings|Shakings: 15 May—UPDATED

New and improved

Ogilvy & Mather has appointed Terry Daly as Auckland-based business director and promoted Christina Mossaidis to Wellington general manager.

With over 16 years experience, Daly was most recently commercial and marketing director at the New Zealand Olympic Committee. In his new role, he will bring a distinct focus on developing the specialist offerings within the Ogilvy Group.

“What I’m most excited about is that I’m representing an advertising business that is a collection of specialist, boutique agencies, created with the smartest people from New Zealand and around the world, with the power of one of the largest, best resourced agencies in the country sitting behind them.”

In her new role, Mossaidis will place emphasis on changing ‘social norms’ and she comes into the position following two years in senior client service positions within Ogilvy & Mather as well as past roles at M&C Saatchi and Saatchi & Saatchi.

“The agency’s culture is one of partnership, integrity, and a tireless passion to help our clients achieve their goals. This is evidenced by our first ranking on the All of Government full service agency panel, which combined client satisfaction survey results with our RFP score. The Wellington office enjoys a enviable position – built on a solid platform of both Government and commercial experience. We are a nimble operation with account management, planning, creative, production, media and behavioural sciences unit on the ground, while enjoying the full support of Ogilvy Auckland, one of the largest full service agencies in New Zealand.”

The Ogilvy Wellington team works across clients including EECA, Consumer NZ, Open Polytechnic, Public Trust and the Environmental Protection Authority.

No replacement executive creative director has been named following Angus Hennah’s departure last year.

Capital show

Go Media has been awarded the Mana/Newlands bus advertising contract for the greater Wellington area, starting July 1. The Mana contract was previously held by iSite Media.

This contract represents coverage from the Wellington CBD up through Johnsonville, Newlands, Tawa, Whitby, Raumati, Paraparaumu and Waikanae. And this is in addition to Go Media’s Wellington UZABUS contract which gives it exclusivity in the bus market through to Otaki

“This is a massive contract for Go Media and represents almost 25 percent of the Greater Wellington bus market,” says Go Media’s Jon Drumm. “Go Media has dominated the South Island bus advertising market for some time, but this Mana Bus contract alongside the recent Auckland Airbus agreement secures Go Media as a truly nationwide bus media player with exclusivity of routes in the New Zealand bus advertising marketplace.”

And in other outdoor news, Roadside Attractions has launched Christchurch’s first outdoor digital billboard. Located in the RE:START container mall complex in central Christchurch, the high resolution display is available in 15 second still or video segments (or multiples thereof as required) on a weekly basis.

Trade winds

TVNZ has appointed Mandie Strachan to the newly-created position of trade marketing manager. TVNZ says the role was established within the new marketing team structure to enable more support for sales and media solutions and provide more value for agencies and clients.

Most recently Strachan worked at NZME as trade brand manager after joining the media business in 2011, working within the regional division. She later held a digital marketing role before transitioning to consumer brand manager and then trade brand manager last year.

She has also worked for Sky TV in New Zealand and News Limited in Australia.

She will report to brand marketing manager Jo Jalfon, who joined TVNZ in December.

Previously, Lexie Ribot held the title of business marketing manager, as did Danielle McNaughton, who has recently taken a role as marketing manager with Lightbox. Business brand manager Laura Clotworthy is also set to depart on her OE.

Rolling the dice

The NBR has reported that Fiona Stewart has left her position as loyalty marketing manager at BP to take up a role as marketing communications manager at SkyCity, with one of her main goals being to improve its own loyalty marketing scheme, Premier Rewards.

Stewart won direct marketer of the year at the 2014 NZDM Awards and BP won the supreme award at the TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards for its SmartFuel card, which is now used by over half of its customers.

AdHubbub

Online sales house/ad network AdHub, which attracts an audience of over 900,000 a month through its network of websites including realestate.co.nz, interest.co.nz, Golf.co.nz and NZX.com, has appointed Garry Jordan as its general manager, replacing Paul Mant, who took a role as sales director at TradeMe.

Jordan, who has worked in media sales with Prime and Sky TV, was most recently general manager in Lassoo Media.

“AdHub has been growing significantly in audience and ad revenue and that is set to continue as demand for digital and quality environments grows,” he says. “They are leading the way in ‘native’ advertising and I am excited by the opportunities around programmatic and creative services offerings.”

AdHub is wholly owned by NZME and group director digital Laura Maxwell-Hansen says securing Jordan is a real coup.

“Garry is highly respected in the industry having worked in media for many years with experience on both sides of the media owner/agency fence. This, combined with his strong digital knowledge and experience building the Lassoo business for the past eight years, make him the perfect person to lead AdHub through what will be an exciting period of growth and development. It was a matter of right time right place and we couldn’t be happier to have Garry at the helm.”

NZME is yet to find a replacement for group general manager of digital sales Ben Gibb, who is set to take up a role with Adshel.

From TV to training

Industry training organisation Competenz has appointed Megan Richards as national account manager for journalism, after ten years spent with TVNZ as the broadcaster’s corporate affairs spokesperson.

Her new role involves supervision and quality control of national journalism qualifications developed by Competenz for working journalists and for approved tertiary providers offering journalism courses.

Richards has spent almost 40 years in the media. And her appointment represents a return to her journalistic roots after 16 years in corporate communications.

She has previously worked in daily news in print, radio and television – mostly in Sydney and Melbourne – completing the first 20 years of her working life as editor of the ABC’s radio news operation in Victoria, Australia.

“It’s a really exciting time to be in the Competenz team as we are the new ITO charged with designing journalism qualifications in New Zealand. I’m looking forward to supporting learners as they progress through the qualifications, as well as working with familiar faces in the media and developing new relationships to ensure that our unit standards lead to valued NZQA qualifications that meet the future needs of New Zealand’s media businesses.”

New chair

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has appointed Hon. Heather Roy as its inaugural independent chair.

Roy currently chairs the Electricity and Gas Complaints Commissioner’s Scheme and Medicines New Zealand. As a former minister of consumer affairs, she is well-placed to lead the ASA in further strengthening the effective model of advertising self-regulation it supports.

While the Complaints Board and Appeal Board have always had public chairs, governance has been led by industry members. An external review in 2014 recommended an independent chair to lead the governance committee and an appointment process began in early 2015.

“As a leading industry regulator, the ASA has worked hard to develop a strong process for advertising self-regulation,” says ANZA’s Lindsay Mouat. “Hon. Heather Roy’s skills and experience will be invaluable in leading the ASA in today’s fast-changing advertising world.”

Jolly good fellows

The Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) has inducted three new fellows in 2015: Avon Adams (Wellington), Heather Claycomb (Hamilton) and Brian Finn (Auckland)

“To be selected as a fellow, PR and communication professionals must have made an outstanding contribution to the public relations industry over a significant period of time,” says PRINZ president, Bruce Fraser. “All three incoming fellows have demonstrated this, and between them, have made a contribution not only to the public relations industry, but to the sectors and organisations here and overseas in their careers to date. These include corporate and consultancy, not for profit, local and central Government and its various agencies.”

Adams is a communicator, broadcaster and academic and one of the industry’s most experienced and respected PR professionals.  She has worked in communication roles in the UK, Australia as well as New Zealand where she led communications and corporate affairs for some of New Zealand’s best known brands including Air New Zealand, Vodafone and TVNZ. Today she is the director of communications with the Department of Conservation.

She has a strong interest in communications as a key driver of business excellence and has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions and change communications. She has consulted for many government and private sector organisations and lectured at Massey University and AUT University in journalism and communications.

Claycomb  immigrated to New Zealand in 1999 and founded HMC communications in May 2004. Prior to forming her own consultancy, she worked as a senior consultant with Baldwin Boyle Group (BBG). She is on the Boards of Habitat for Humanity Central North Island, the Hamilton Science Awards Trust (Chair) and Willow Creek NZ. She is currently the Waikato representative on PRINZ National Council.

Finn is a highly experienced and awarded public affairs professional who has worked in New Zealand, Australia, Asia and Europe. He was head of public affairs for the New Zealand Rugby Union from 2004 until 2011 and for several of those years, he also led communications for Rugby New Zealand 2011, the organiser of Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011. His work on the RWC 2011 bid won the PRINZ Supreme Award in 2006. He developed the long-term communications strategy for the management and hosting of RWC 2011 and led and managed all media management and communications for the 2005 British & Irish Lions Tour. He was an associate partner with Ideas Shop for three years, establishing the company’s Auckland office in 2014 and is now director of his own consultancy, Engage Group, working with clients on their public affairs, brand and communications needs. He is a member of the board of Special Olympics New Zealand and is one of the organisers of the bi-annual Southland Party at Parliament.

Cookin’ with gas

Electrolux Small Appliances has named Sid Sahrawat of Sidart and Cassia fame as its new brand ambassador.

“As a three hat chef, and well respected talent in New Zealand, Sid provides us an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our ranges to key media and consumers alike,” says general manager Alan Dalton.

Sarawhat and his team all utilise the three pieces of the Masterpiece Range within Cassia restaurant, most notably using the Masterpiece Immersion Blender to create Chand’s mother’s infamous Coriander chutney, a favourite of loyal diners at Cassia.

“While the Masterpiece range is absolutely created for the home chef, I respect how Electrolux take the lessons they’ve learnt in professional kitchens to implement and inspire those of us at home,” says Sahrawat.

This year sees Electrolux further its focus direct to consumers by increasing its advertising focus, continuing to support key show sponsorships in key radio demographics, as well as implementing an aspiration print and bus back advertising campaign, all of which will now showcase Sahrawat’s award winning dishes.

“Our commitment in the New Zealand market is to continue to dominate this area, and showcase that the Electrolux brand is by far the most aspirational small kitchen appliance to have on your kitchen countertop. And with Sid’s support, we know this will be the case,” he says.
