YouTube hits 1 billion monthly users milestone

It's no easy feat to have one out of every seven people on the planet surfing your site for videos of cats and Justin Bieber, but that's exactly what YouTube's achieved this month.

The streaming video giant has announced on its blog it now serves content to more than 1 billion unique users a month. This comes six months after Facebook reached the same milestone.

Here are some handy stats YouTube provides to put the figure into context:

- Nearly one out of every two people on the internet visits YouTube.

- Monthly viewership is the equivalent of roughly 10 Super Bowl audiences.

- If YouTube were a country, it’d be the third largest in the world after China and India.

We should mention at this point that user figures are a foggy mix of statistics and black magic, rarely ever using the same metric of measure. Only a couple of months ago independent analysts Trendstream said YouTube has around 300 million active users monthly. Numbers differ depending on which analysts you ask.

Google acquired YouTube for $1.8 billion in 2006, when the site had around 50 million users. StopPress has asked Google for New Zealand specific user statistics.
