Uber wants to take Aucklanders for a ride

Ride sharing service Uber is hitting Auckland streets, encouraging new users to try out the service and leave feedback.

The service, available as an iOS and Android app and a desktop dashboard, has limited cars available in the city already, according to its website.

The site also offers a fare calculator and offers a flat rate of $70 to get to the airport or the city centre. The base fare is listed at $1.50, with $1.45 then charged per km or 50c per minute.

“Psst, Auckland. Opened your @uber app today? ;),” was the message from the Uber Auckland Twitter account today.

Tweeter Tenani French posted an image showing an Uber pickup request for central Auckland.

The tweets suggest Uber has filled the social media role it advertised earlier this year, along with positions for a general manager and driver operations.

The service has rolled out to 33 countries, with Auckland the first New Zealand city on board.
