Spark, NZME and TVNZ on top in Netguide Web Awards

The winners of the NetGuide Web Awards were announced earlier this week, and Spark and NZME both came away with a triple treat and TVNZ Ondemand took two.

The winners were decided by public vote of 207,000 people and Spark scooped three awards for best internet service provider, best mobile network and, for the second year in a row, best online fundraising initiative for its crowd-funding platform Givealittle.

“We’re rapt to have won best ISP for the first time in many years, and to pick up best mobile network and best online fundraising initiative on top was just fantastic," says general manager of Spark corporate relations, Andrew Pirie. "It shows that the hard work Spark’s been doing over the last few years to turn the business around and focus more on customers is working. Above all, we want to say a huge thanks to all the people who voted for us in all three categories. We’re incredibly humbled by such strong support from our customers.”

As for NZME, nzherald.co.nz website won best news site over 3news.co.nz, odt.co.nz, Stuff.co.nz and tvnz.co.nz, while Grabone won best shopping site over Trade Me, Mighty Ape, Air New Zealand and Treat Me and best overall site for the year for the second year in a row, beating nzherald.co.nz, stuff.co.nz, trademe.co.nz and mightyape.co.nz.

"As one of the key sites within the NZME digital stable, nzherald.co.nz has seen huge growth in news audience nationally, with over 50 percent growth year on year," says NZME digital media director Laura Maxwell Hansen. "It proves that the local content from our national editorial team at NZME really is delivering the content that matters most to New Zealanders."

On average, NZME director of ecommerce and new ventures Richard Harrison says someone buys something on Grabone every 12 seconds. So it's pretty popular. It has also launched the Giftinator, a Christmas gift generator and expanded its reach outside of their email and website stronghold by leveraging NZME properties and audiences.

“The backing of NZME. publishing and radio and the breadth of audience delivered to GrabOne has extended our audience diversity and created new opportunities in the corporate sector with the likes of Spark, Honda, Appliance Shed and Genesis Energy," says managing director Ryan Watkins.

TVNZOnDemand was crowned best entertainment site for the second year running, beating out stuff.co.nz, SkyGo, nzdating.co.nz and TV3 and it also won best site for families.

TVNZ OnDemand reached record streams in 2014, with October the highest month yet. The month finished with 6.3 million streams, up ten percent from 5.76 million streams in September and up 34 percent from the same month last year.

“Our fast-tracked, international premieres enable Kiwi audiences to be part of a global conversation in real time, as well as never missing this country’s favourite shows such as Shortland Street, The Big Bang Theory and One News,” says TVNZ head of digital media Thor Bayer.

As of early next year, TVNZ OnDemand will be requiring users to register their details and watch content while logged-in so as to improve the viewing experience and better target ads at them.

Other winners included, realestate.co.nz as best real estate site, seek.co.nz as best job site, whaleoil.co.nz as best blog, nzdating.co.nz as best lifestyle and recreation site, Geekzone.co.nz for best online forum, Zeald as best web developer, airnewzealand.co.nz for best travel site, asb.co.nz for best financial site and xero.com as best site for small business.
