Mobile key as TVNZ Ondemand continues upwards

Mobile devices now account for more than a third of TVNZ’s Ondemand service video streams and are a key part of the growth in video views.

More than four million videos were watched using the service last month, an increase of 82 percent on the same month last year.

It didn’t take the broadcaster long to reach the four million views mark; in March the high was three million.

Ondemand was launched in March 2007 and general manager of digital and media Tom Cotter expects mobile device views will keep growing in line with trends in mature markets.

“The proportion of growth of [views on]PCs has become static in mature markets.

“Some markets are at 50 percent [of video views on mobile devies], some are at 30. The ones that are at 50 have a much higher proportion of children’s content.”

TVNZ will soon be adding the Galaxy Tab 3 to its range of Samsung mobile devices its app can be used with. Cotter says of the mobile devices viewers use for Ondemand, iPods continue to perform well, possibly because they got a foothold with users before iPhones reached the New Zealand market.

In August TVNZ launched its app for some Samsung smartphones. In one day last month, Ondemand was used for 50,000 streams on mobiles.
