Air NZ rethinks call for volunteer writers

Air New Zealand is reconsidering its approach to an initiative seeking volunteers to write for The Flying Social Network.

The airline said in a blog post it wanted creative and interesting writers to submit pieces about aviation, travel, health, technology, education, lifestyle, film, fashion and food, among other subjects.

In return for writing, contributors would get a profile page with links to their social media channels and content would be shared on Air New Zealand’s social channels, it said.

The terms and conditions said it didn’t pay for or contribute to any costs relating to submitted material and submission granted a worldwide perpetual license to Air New Zealand to use, publish and distribute the material.

The initiative was met with several negative comments on Twitter, with a sample of these below.

Air New Zealand tweeted earlier today, “We’ve heard your feedback re The Flying Social Network contributors. We’ll re-think our approach & come up with appropriate compensation.”

“The Flying Social Network is about providing opportunities for our online community to engage with us and share their thoughts and ideas with each other. This initiative provides another outlet for our followers to do this, should they wish to,” spokesperson Brigitte Ransom said in a statement to StopPress.

“In the spirit of engaging with our community we have taken onboard feedback from some of our followers and are re-thinking our approach around appropriate compensation for Flying Social Network contributors.”

The airline didn’t say what the compensation might be.

Earlier it ran a competition to find a “hidden design talent”, in partnership with Trelise Cooper’s concept store The Co-Op, won by Christchurch’s Lisa Park.
