In the skin of Norman Bates

Social TV agency Darewin has released a new campaign to promote the third season of the 13ème Rue (part of NBCUniversal) series Bates Motel. And for it, the agency has created a site that puts you in the skin of famous Psycho character Norman Bates.

The campaign called DerriereLeMur or ‘Behind the Wall’ puts the site visitor into the position of Norman Bates. As the agency puts it: “The interactive experience accesses your webcam and microphone to turn you into a voyeur in the same manner as Norman who spies on hotel guests through his bedroom wall.”

The experience places the viewer in Norman Bates’ room and presents a view of a hole in the wall that the killer uses to spy on hotel uests. Once activated, the experience provides an interactive element in that the point of view responds to the movements of the viewer. The closer the viewer moves to the laptop’s camera, the closer the experience places viewer to the action unfolding on the other side of the wall.

For the most part, this is really just a quirky way to present the trailer of series, which plays out as a prequel to Hitchcock’s 1960 classic.

According to a release, the website follows up on the success of Darewin’s campaign for the film Un Illustre Inconnu, which stole the identities of 40 Facebook influencers.

The campaign was recently honoured with the Shorty Awards’ ‘Best on Facebook’ prize.
