Half the nation tunes in to watch the Cricket World Cup final

The Cricket World Cup final on Sunday saw nearly half the nation sitting on the edge of their seats rooting for the Black Caps as Sky’s viewer ratings soared.

The 11-hour match attracted a whopping 1,964,500 viewers across Sky Sport and Prime TV, with free-to-air channel Prime posting its highest ratings ever, according to Sky’s director of communications Kirsty Way.

She says Prime’s 28 percent share of the AP+ viewing audience saw it out-rate all other free-to-air channels combined between 6.00pm and 10.30pm, wth 560,000 people tuning in at the game’s peak. In the 24-45-year-old category, Sky’s share was 34 percent.

“With almost two million viewers on Sunday, and a cumulative audience for the live Cricket World Cup matches of 2.5 million, New Zealand really showed their commitment to the Black Caps,” Sky chief executive John Fellet said.

“Between Sky and Prime, we were proud to ensure extensive coverage of this historic final was available to everyone in New Zealand. The mammoth viewership is testament to our national pride for the Black Caps during what has been an exciting and unforgettable Cricket World Cup.”
