Movings/Shakings: 16 February—UPDATED

Trio of changes at NZME

NZME has made several changes to its team as part of its ongoing evolution as a cross-channel multimedia enterprise.

The conglomerate has promoted Tracey Fox into a new role leading a centralised group creative team. Fox has been general manager of marketing at NZME Radio for the past two years, overseeing marketing of all their radio brands through a time of major transformation.

The new NZME group creative team will be responsible for both consumer and trade creative for all NZME brands plus client advertising across all platforms.

“I’ve loved my time as head of marketing but am very excited to be heading back into the creative side,” says Fox. “We’re bringing together an exceptionally talented bunch of creative types – art directors, designers and copywriters from various parts of the business to form this new creative hub. We will be working on anything and everything from print, radio, digital, video, events and activation – it’s a fantastic brief.”

Fox has spent 15 years in a creative leadership role at TBWATequila in London, Singapore and New Zealand and has picked up numerous creative awards. She moved to the client side to establish the Skycity internal studio before joining ‘TRN’ (now NZME Radio) in January 2013. Fox began her role 8 December 2014 and NZME.

To fill the gap left by Fox, NZME Radio has promoted Bek Wall to the position of general manager of marketing.

She previously held the role of head of media strategy with the company, and will now lead the strategy and marketing team for both consumer and trade.

“Our brands connect with audiences across a multitude of platforms,” says Wall. “The market is strong and every day we offer our clients creative integrated solutions to engage these audiences. It’s competitive and that makes you lift your game. I’ve got a great team and we are very excited about 2015.”

Wall has previously worked as the marketing manager for DTR, partnerships manager for American Express and held senior roles in a retail advertising agency and a website development company. Wall’s new position also sees her as a member of the NZME Radio executive team.

NZME has also confirmed the appointment of Brad Horne, who will slot into the position of an account director in general manager of network sales Deidre Bailey’s team.

Horne had a short stint outside of media, serving as a sales manager at JPS Marketing, after previously working at MediaWorks for nine years.

“Brad brings a wealth of experience with enthusiasm to burn,” says Neil Jackson, the NZME director of direct sales. “Having worked with him previously for a number of years I’m well aware of his client serviceability. He hunts new opportunities with a passion and his track record in this space is exceptional.”

Taking the fashion reins

Bauer Media has announced the appointment of Sally-Ann Mullin as the editor of Fashion Quarterly magazine from the autumn issue.

Bringing more than 10 years of fashion, beauty and editorial experience to the role, Mullin has been promoted to the position after three years as Fashion Quarterly’s fashion editor.

Publisher Brendon Hill said: “Sally-Ann’s appointment is a terrific result for brand FQ as it moves into an exciting stage of evolution across its many consumer touch points. Sally-Ann lives and breathes fashion and beauty, and our advertising partners will be thrilled at this appointment.”

Mullin said the catalyst for her love of fashion and beauty as a young girl was through reading her mother’s copies of Fashion Quarterly. “It is such an honour to lead this iconic brand. Fashion is about emotion and the new-look team at Fashion Quarterly will leverage our passion for the industry and deep audience connection with a fresh perspective.”

Joining Mullin at the helm of Fashion Quarterly as deputy editor is Megan Bedford, whose previous roles with Bauer include editor of Cleo and five years as features editor of FQ.

“We look forward to delivering innovative and creative solutions for our advertising clients and continuing the success of the FQ brand well into the future,” says Mullin.

Mullin replaces previous editor Fiona Hawtin.

More business

The Business Herald has undergone something of an update, which an NZME release says will see the section of the paper “offering readers more news, more features and more specialist analysis.”

The Monday to Thursday business section, which traditionally shares a liftout with sport, will also now be turning upside-down so readers can flip it to read from the front.

Throughout the week, new columnists will include heavyweight industry players Shane Solly (director at Harbour Asset Management), Paul Glass from Devon Funds Management, Rickey Ward and Bernard Doyle from the Investment Strategy Group at brokers JBWere and Paul Harrison and Matt Goodson from Salt Asset Management.

Business editor Liam Dann says bi-weekly columns by Mark Lister, head of Private Wealth Research at Craigs Investment Partners, will round out the in depth analysis from inside the markets while he says there’s more space for specialist business writers.

“For more analysis of the big stories from across the Tasman we welcome to the team Sydney based financial journalist Christopher Niesche who will provide expert commentary on the Australian financial sector with his own column,” said Dann in a release.

Niesche is the former deputy editor of the Australian Financial Review and a former editor of The Business Herald.

Dann says The Business Herald is also re-launching specialist commentary on the agricultural sector while there’ll be more equity market news and speculation with the popular Stocktakes column that will run on a rolling basis throughout the week.

“Our absolute focus is giving our audience the information and insight they need, when they need it on the important issues,” said Dann.

The Herald’s editor-in-chief Tim Murphy, says the changes give business more valuable territory in the Herald to provide the best market intelligence and they also demonstrate a continued investment in New Zealand’s leading newspaper.

“Our ability to report on the financial sector is critical,” says Murphy. “By investing in Business, Liam and his team can give our readers all the news and meaningful analysis nationally and internationally that they expect, alongside the best financial journalism from around the world through our syndicated partners.”

Leaving the bureau

MediaWorks has confirmed the appointment of Gerhard Simanke and Johnathan Schaffer, who both join the network from the Radio Bureau. Simanke will be in a senior management group agency role and Schaffer joins in a radio strategy and planning manager role.

The pair will join the MediaWorks sales team, and will work alongside commercial director Paul Hancox and group head of revenue Liz Fraser.

While at the Radio Bureau, Simanke worked as an account director while Schaffer served as a digital planner.

Bringing New Zealand and Singapore closer together

Singapore Airlines has appointed Shahreen Goodrick as the New Zealand manager of marketing and alliances, making her responsible for developing and implementing the national marketing strategy leveraging Singapore Airlines’ relationships with alliance and trade partners.

Goodrick’s previous role was marketing executive for alliances, a position in which she coordinated all sales, strategy and marketing activity in Australia for Singapore Airlines’ alliances with Virgin Australia and Star Alliance.

Goodrick joined Singapore Airlines in 2011 as a management trainee in Australia’s area marketing department, before being appointed to the South West Pacific office as regional marketing executive.

Prior to joining Singapore Airlines, Goodrick served as assistant director in the Aviation Industry Policy Branch of the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure and Transport, overseeing Australia’s international aviation policy settings.

“We are delighted that someone of Shahreen’s calibre will be joining us at our Auckland offices,” said Edwin Chiang, general manager at Singapore Airlines New Zealand. “Her experience in managing alliances will be key to growing our relationship with Air New Zealand and the trade.”

Singapore Airlines’ alliance with Air New Zealand went into effect on 6 January 2015.

Ayers apparent

Rydges Hotels & Resorts has announced the appointment of Danelle Ayers as national director of sales and marketing.

The new senior management role has been specifically created for Ayers to strategically manage both the sales and marketing function across five New Zealand properties.

Ayers was first hired in 2011 by Rydges Wellington as director of sales and marketing when the property first opened. Two years later her role expanded to oversee the sales function of Rydges Latimer Christchurch when the new hotel opened its doors.

Since her appointment Ayers has been the brains behind innovative traditional and social media activation campaigns that have won plaudits within the hospitality industry. As a result, for three years running she has dominated the national hospitality awards judged by Hospitality New Zealand and won the ‘Excellence in Marketing’ category repeatedly.

Ayers will be wholly responsible for identifying new business opportunities, leading and managing the national sales team, overseeing national key accounts and developing and managing all strategic campaigns.

“This executive promotion recognises Danelle’s tremendous talent and tenacious, hard work,” says Simon White, spokesperson for Rydges Hotels & Resorts. “Simply put, it’s a direct reflection of her commitment to the hotel. Our team is looking forward to helping her pull together the incredible strengths of all five of our properties and boost our presence in the New Zealand market.”

Ayers new role will continue to encompass her existing responsibilities at Rydges Wellington.

Dairy duo

Herd management company CRV Ambreed is continuing to grow its capacity to support New Zealand dairy farmers with two key appointments to its senior management team.

Mathew Macfie (left) and Andrew Singers have been appointed as sales and marketing manager and information management and information technology manager, respectively.

CRV Ambreed managing director Angus Haslett said the additions to its senior management team will help the company continue to offer leading herd improvement solutions in New Zealand.

“Mr Macfie and Mr Singers collectively bring more than 40 years’ experience in agribusiness and the rural sector,” he said.
“Their respective expertise will ensure CRV continues to provide herd improvement products and services that benefit our farming clients and the New Zealand dairy industry as a whole.”

Macfie joined CRV Ambreed following more than a decade with Gallagher. His most recent position was on Gallagher’s senior leadership team as international business development manager.

As sales and marketing manager for CRV Ambreed, Macfie leads a team of about 50-60 part-time and full-time staff.

“CRV Ambreed is a dynamic company with a well-respected reputation. It is a privilege to help our customers better manage their herds and achieve the best possible results for their farming businesses,” he said.

Singers (left) joined CRV Ambreed following a position as chief information officer with Ruralco Holdings Limited in Sydney.
He has also held several roles within RD1, his latest as group information technology manager where he led the development of several business and farm related IT strategies.

As information management and information technology manager, Singers will focus on CRV’s IT framework and business systems.

“Our data strategy is also a key focus for me, particularly with respect to our breeding programme,” said Singers. “I will be working on both the collection of data to support CRV’s breeding programme, as well as the generation of farm information products to support the sales team and customers to better manage their herds. The aim is that our customers will find it easier to capture data, and get results they need to improve their herd in a more timely way.”
