A virtual reality headset for about $30

At over $400, the Oculus Rift headset isn’t exactly something that most Kiwis would be willing to splash out on. Fortunately, there is an alternative option for those who want the virtual reality experience without the hefty pricetag attached. For the sum of US$24.95, those who don’t want to incur credit card debt can get the virtual reality experience via the DodoCase, a virtual reality headset made almost entirely out of cardboard.

Google-owned DodoCase is best known for its trendy tablet cases, but the company has decided to branch out into the virtual reality realm with its latest innovation.

To bring the experience to life, users simply need to attach their phones to the contraption and then put it on. This creates an immersive experience that transports the user to a rollercoaster, a helicopter flight over the Australia’s Great Barrier Reef or a trippy space-aged location populated by Tetris blocks.

To access these digital landscapes, users simply need to download the specially created app available on Google Play. And if the various online reviews currently bouncing around YouTube are anything to go by, then it would appear that users are already enjoying the experience.
