Call for entries: News Works Newspaper Ad of the Year

Entries are now open for the 2014 Newspaper Advertising Awards, with the usual $10,000 up for grabs for winner of Newspaper Ad of the Year. Last year, there were 180 entries and DDB Auckland won with its YWCA advertisement promoting equal pay for women with the headline “from now until the end of the year, women will work for free”.

This year, in addition to the grand prize, there’s also a $1000 media lunch to be awarded to the winner of the “best media thinking” category, as is spelt out on this promo napkin that just arrived in the letterbox, created by The Namery and Lure Creative.

There are six categories in this year’s awards:

Best topical: Newspaper is an immediate medium. This category recognises the best use of that unique property

Best digital: The best use of newspaper’s digital assets

Best craft (art): The best use of typography, illustration, image or overall art direction craft in newspaper advertising.

Best craft (copy): The best use of copywriting in newspaper advertising.

Best media thinking: Any idea that has clever media thinking at its core. Each entry must be supported with a short summary that needs to cover your thinking and approach.

Best news brand campaign (new for 2014): Excellence in integrated campaigns across print and digital newspaper platforms. This category is an evolution of last year’s “best integrated” category.

The 2014 creative and media judging panels include DDB ECD Shane Bradnick, along with two international judges, Alex Grieve & Adrian Rossi, Executive Creative Directors of Abbott Mead Vickers, London.

Established in 2005, the annual Newspaper Advertising Awards recognises creative and media excellence in newspaper and digital news site advertising.

“Last year’s awards worked really well, and this year too we hope to continue driving more connection between creatives and the media,” says Sarah Ferbrache, News Works marketing manager.

Entry is free, and any ad that has run in New Zealand newspapers or on NZ News Brand websites between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014 is eligible. Entrants have until 5pm on Friday 1st August to upload entries, although every Ad of the Month winner over the last year is automatically entered into the Ad of the Year competition. Winners will be announced at the Newspaper Awards night October 2, at AUT’s Sir Paul Reeves building.
