The Dominion Post, NZ Herald, Good, Home and Listener line up for major Canon awards

The New Zealand Herald and the Dominion Post will battle it out for one of the major prizes at this year’s Canon Media Awards — the Newspaper of the Year for a paper with circulation greater than 30,000; while Tangible Media’s Good, Bauer’s Home and New Zealand Listener are up for Best Newsstand Magazine.

The Herald won the major newspaper award last year.

The Manawatu Standard and Northern Advocate are this year’s contenders for Best Newspaper with circulation under 30,000.

Another big award, Best Website, will be won by either 3News, The Wireless (Radio New Zealand’s youth-centred offering) and Yahoo NZ, with Yahoo also in the running for Best Online News Site, along with Stuff.co.nz and Nzherald.co.nz.

In the newly-introduced category of Best Blog, the finalists are The Listener‘s Toby Manhire, Whale Oil’s Cameron Slater and Giovanni Tiso’s Bat Bean Beam.

And we can’t resist a mention that StopPress’s sister title Idealog is up for Best Magazine Cover and Magazine Feature Writer of the Year for Business and Politics with Vaughn Davis.

Entries this year jumped 21 percent to 1687, a record level. “Right across all the strands of journalism — whether it be editing, reporting the news, writing features, columns, reviews, blogs, sketching artwork or a cartoon, or taking photos and videos — there’s great interest in being part of these annual awards,” says Rick Neville, editorial director of the Newspaper Publishers’ Association.

In all there are 190 finalists spanning 66 categories across newspapers, magazines, websites, writing, photography, art and cartoons. Winners will be announced at Auckland on 9 May.
