Radio Hauraki’s new app is NSFW

Mainstream rock radio station Radio Hauraki has released a new app for iOS and Android, called Hauraki, with an optimised player for streaming the station live.

The station, which is owned by The Radio Network, is relatively ‘not safe for work’ to begin with. However, if you really want to get fired you can use the app to stealthily (or not-so-stealthily) look at pictures of half-naked women on your smartphone or tablet.

As it says on the website: “Finally, our NSFW galleries are in our app, along with all the best stuff from Hauraki: read the latest Music News, listen to Hauraki Podcasts, check out our hottest photo galleries, Friday Funnies, music reviews, gaming and more. Quick links to call and text the studio help get you in first to win stuff. The new audio submission feature lets you send us a rave or a rant straight to the studio without waiting on a phone line.”

The app was created by the digital team at The Radio Network, in conjunction with Australian digital agency Kablamo.

General manager of digital, Carolyn Luey, says the company created the app because its existing version was outdated.

“We used to have another app but it didn’t have the same level of content-richness and interaction that this one does,” says Luey.

Smartphone penetration in New Zealand has increased significantly over the last 18 months, and the app’s user interface had to be updated to reflect that.

Radio Hauraki rebranded earlier this year with the help of Saatchi & Saatchi in order to court younger listeners.

“The new Hauraki app is just a reflection of the new Hauraki that we’ve launched earlier this year,” Luey says.

The app can be personalised, so NSFW content can be stripped out of the home page for kid-friendly consumption.

It features competitions, game reviews, funny videos, and even the ability to record a “shout out”, which may be played on air.

The app was released on Monday, and as such Luey says it has only been downloaded “a few hundred” times. However, the company will be running a four-week promotion to drive downloads.

The app’s launch sponsor is Pitt Stop, which will run a six-week launch campaign with Hauraki.
