Young Kiwi directors recognised at Cannes

Two young New Zealand directors are showing the world how it’s done.

Zoe McIntosh (Thick as Thieves) has taken top honours for best non-European broadcast at the Young Director Award for her work on YWCA’s Demand Equal Pay video (via DDB New Zealand).

The YDA is held at the Cannes Lions every year and celebrates up and coming directors. McIntosh was also shortlisted for her directing on the V Motion Project video.

Thick as Thieves executive producer Nik Beachman says there will be a champagne celebration in her honour tonight.

Over at Film Construction, 23-year-old Hugh Mitton has claimed his second directorial award for a quirky Coca Cola ad, at the MOFILM awards in Cannes.

MOFILM holds film and ad making competitions for brands to use as a proving ground for new directing talent. Mitton won the same award last year with another quirky Coke ad, which saw him releasing airborne Coke cans to an unsuspecting Wellington public.

He has also had earlier success with Coke for the ‘Power up’ spot.
