2012’s apps of Apple’s eye

Five Kiwi apps have floated above the rest in Apple’s pick of this year’s best in the New Zealand App Store.

Air New Zealand’s mPassTrade Me Property, and the Countdown App were picked by Apple as the top disruptive services for iPhone. The latter two launched earlier this year. Apple showed Kiwi game devs some love too. Super Monster Ate My Condo!, developed by NZ studio PikPok, was one of the top picks for casual games. Bee Leader, developed by Mount Maunganui-based studio Flightless, featured on the New Ways to Play list.

Action Movie FX, which lets you add effects to video on your iPhone, took the overall top app award for iPhone. Creative drawing app Paper was this year’s best app for iPad.

Although not an editor’s choice, MetService’s weather app has proven popular with New Zealanders. It’s the second most popular paid iPhone app, behind instant messaging service WhatsApp.

Also released today is Apple’s NZ iTunes chart toppers for movies and music. Annah Mac’s Girl in Stilettos was the top kiwi song, while The Sparrow by Lawrence Arabia took best NZ album.

Superhero mashup The Avengers was the pick for best movie, and The Sapphires is listed as the best homegrown movie, even though it was produced in Australia.

In November, Apple hit the 1 million mark for the number of apps submitted to the App Store.
