Voyager Media Awards 2018 finalists announced

Finalists for the 2018 Voyager Media Awards (formerly Canon Media Awards) have been announced and last year’s winners, The New Zealand Herald, Weekend Herald and Stuff, are no doubt hoping for another successful night.

Now in its 45th year, the awards celebrate the best of New Zealand’s newspapers, magazines, websites and apps as well as the work of feature writers, columnists, cartoonists, reviewers and photographers. Over 2000 entries have been whittled down across the 68 categories.

Internet provider Voyager took over the naming rights to the Media Awards at the end of last year. About its involvement with the awards, CEO Seeby Woodhouse says it’s a natural fit, given the impact that rapid digital developments are having on New Zealand’s media landscape.

“The internet has transformed media. It’s changed the speed in which people expect information and opened up realms of possibilities for innovation and accessibility going forward. Against this backdrop, the quality of journalism is more important than ever – which is why we’re thrilled to be able to support the New Zealand media industry during this time.”

Last year’s Newspaper of the Year (more than 30,000 circulation) winner New Zealand Herald is a finalist again, alongside Otago Daily Times and The Press.

In the Newspaper of Year (up to 30,000 circulation) Award, it’s Ashburton Guardian/Ashburton Guardian Co Ltd, Bay of Plenty Times, Rotorua Daily Post, Waikato Times and Wairarapa Times-Age up for the title.

In the Weekly Newspaper of the Year category, last year’s winner and also the Canon Newspaper of the Year 2017 winner, Weekend Herald is again on the finalist list alongside Sunday Star-Times and The Weekend Press.

In the magazine categories, last year’s winners, Home and New Zealand Geographic, which won Best Magazine Design and Magazine of the Year respectively are once again finalists in those categories.

Also up for Best Magazine Design is Metro and Together Journal, while New Zealand Listener and North & South are up for Magazine of the Year.

In the digital categories, Website of the Year will be a contest between last year’s winner New Zealand Herald, Newsroom and Stuff.

Best News Website/App also sees the return of last year’s winner in the finalists list, with Newshub up for it once again alongside Newsroom, New Zealand Herald and Stuff.

There is no blog category this year, however, a new category called The Best Innovation in Digital Storytelling has been introduced. Up for this award are Frank Film Ltd for Christchurch Dilemmas episode 11, RNZ for The 9th Floor, rnz.co.nz/Great Southern TV and Animation Research for NZ Wars: The Stories of Ruapekapeka, and Stuff for CTV: 115 and Under Fire 330.

The other new awards include Political Journalist of the Year, the Environmental/Sustainability Award sponsored by Meridian, Best First-person Essay or Feature, Best Team Investigation, Best Videographer – junior, Best Team Video – News and Best Team Video – Feature sponsored by Canon.

The winners will be announced at a Voyager Media Awards Gala Dinner on 11 May.

The full list of finalists can be seen on the Voyager Media Awards website.
