Sunday Star-Times to move to compact format

Stuff is changing the Sunday Star-Times from broadsheet to compact format, following on from the company shifting all nine daily newspapers to compact in April.

The changeover will take place from Sunday 21 October, and the paper will have a design and content makeover. The Sunday magazine, Focus and Escape sections will remain the same.

Sinead Boucher, Stuff chief executive, says going compact gives the company a chance to re-imagine the paper and magazine offerings.

“The Sunday magazine is getting a design update, and we are adding new columnists to our line-up to showcase even more New Zealand voices such as ‘how to Dad’ Jordan Watson, senior business journalist Hamish Rutherford, and other new food, tech and sports writers. We will continue providing our readers with an absorbing, fresh approach to high-quality journalism and presentation.”

Stuff recently hosted reader and advertising agency focus groups, where a mocked-up prototype of the new-look paper was shared around for feedback. Stuff will now tweak the paper based on these discussions before the refreshed Sunday Star-Times is rolled out.

This process is the same as with the change of the nine daily papers to a compact format, as Bernadette Courtney, editor-in-chief – newsroom, told StopPress in May.

For these sessions, Stuff produced a regional compact prototype so that the subscribers could see what the paper might look like.

This comes off the back of news earlier in the week that The Court of Appeal has rejected the proposed merger between NZME and Stuff. The decision is the latest blow for NZME and Stuff since the two applied to amalgamate in 2015.
