The Hits aims to save lives with music

Immediate CPR can double or triple a person’s chance of survival and The Hits wants to make sure its listeners are ready to assist by giving them a musical tool.

When performing CPR, a person should push hard and fast in the centre of the chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute so in a new initiative, the radio station is identifying some of those helpful tunes.

Called ‘Songs That Can Save Lives’, it will see the station continue to play songs from its usual repertoire, however, its announcers will draw attention to those that have 104 beats per minute.

They include: Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’, Savage Garden’s ‘To the Moon and Back’ and Tom Cochrane’s ‘Life is a Highway’.

“First aid knowledge is important for everyone,” content director Todd Campbell says in the release. “By creating awareness of this situation in a unique way, we hope to invite people to find out more about how to react in a situation when someone needs help.”

Ex-chief paramedic for the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Barry Watkin added when someone requires CPR there is a lot going on at once, so having a song that you can remember can be incredibly helpful.

“The most vital thing is taking action; call emergency services, think of the beat and start CPR. It’s great to see The Hits are raising awareness for such a crucial element in emergency response.”

The initiative is part of NZME’s Wellness Week, an internal event that focuses on the health and wellbeing of its staff.
