Aotearoa’s best honoured at the 2017 New Zealand Television Awards

The New Zealand Television Awards recognised excellence in local television programmes as well as individual achievement as it announced the 2017 winners last night at Auckland’s SkyCity Theatre.

The event was hosted by Oliver Driver, with the ceremony featuring 25 awards.

Among the winners, Best Drama series went to 800 Words 2, Best Factual Series went to Why Am I? – The Science of Us and Best Reality Series went to Songs From the Inside III Christchurch

Meanwhile, in the news and current affairs categories, it was MediaWorks celebrating the most, with Mike McRoberts winning Best Presenter: News and Current Affairs and Newshub’s Kaikoura Earthquake coverage winning Best News Coverage. However, Newsroom.co.nz won Best Current Affairs Programme The Politician, The Police and The Payout, 20 June 2017.

MediaWorks chief news officer Hal Crawford says it was great to see everyone come together for the NZ TV Awards again.

“… it’s an opportunity to celebrate hard work and success across the industry. I’m incredibly proud of the Newshub team, and pleased that our passion and dedication has been recognised tonight.”

TVNZ chose not to enter its newsroom into any news and current affairs awards, telling StopPress: “We think news and entertainment content is distinct and that’s what guided our thinking.”

“Our view is that the awards would be better focused as screen producers’ awards – as in Australia – concentrating on entertainment video content as a complement to the Canon Media Awards, which celebrate quality journalism and video excellence by all local media players,” said general manager of corporate communications Georgie Hills.

TVNZ did see success with Toni Street winning Woman’s Day Television Personality Of The Year.
