Taking the lead

MediaWorks has announced the appointment of Oskar Alley as the lead digital editor in the Newshub team.

Alley joins Newshub from The Dominion Post, where he held a variety of roles including assistant editor, chief reporter and most recently deputy editor.

He was named senior reporter of the year at the Qantas Media Awards in 2003 and all up, is bringing more than 15 years’ experience to his new role.

As lead digital editor, Alley will oversee all day-to-day editorial work on the Newshub website and help drive its overall daily news agenda.

Head of digital news Shaun Davies said it’s fortunate to have someone of Alley’s calibre to bolster the digital team at a time of unprecedented growth.

Design minded

Young+Shand has appointed Geoff Joe to the newly created role of design director.

Joe joins from the UK where he worked at MediaMonks, following stints at Resn and ColensoBBDO.

He also has experience to draw on from his own digital startup agency, Skull and Bones, which he formed following his studies.

Joe said Young+Shand’s unique approach to digital marketing and its ability to produce genuinely effective campaigns is what attracted him to the agency.

Creative director Tim Wood said he is excited to see how Joe’s design experience and leadership will add a further dimension to the quality of Young & Shand’s work.

Moving on

December 2016 saw the departure of Carolyn Luey from NZME where she held the role of chief operating officer for a year. Matthew Wilson has since taken over as acting chief operating officer.

Wilson was previously general manager of Herald operations, and his appointment follows a successful career leading a number of NZME’s operational teams. He brings with him over two decades of experience working across NZME’s newspaper brands, including finance roles in print, commercial, content and corporate to leading the newspaper sales, print and Herald product functions.

His predecessor Luey is now the New Zealand GM of enterprise solutions at MYOB.

Luey’s time as chief operating officer followed one and a hal -years as group strategy and operations director at NZME from July 2014.

Prior to this, she was group GM of product and digital at The Radio Network.

A pair of appointments

SoundCloud has announced a local sales team for Australia and New Zealand, with the appointment of two new sales executives.

Leading the team as commercial director is Shaun Alexander, who was previously a Pandora executive. In the new role, he will report to SoundCloud’s vice president of international, Sonia Flynn and be responsible for driving and delivering a strong sales strategy alongside inviting new business from brands and ad agencies.

He is joined by Marta Bonzanini, who is the new senior account manager, brand partnership. She joins from Facebook where she held roles within its client solutions team in Australia and Europe.

Bonzanini will be responsible for supporting the development of the sales strategy and building relationships with brand partners. 

The pair’s appointments follows the rollout of SoundCloud’s consumer subscription service and introduction of ads in Australia and New Zealand in September 2016. 

Both Alexander and Bonzanini will be based in Sydney.

Expanding the team

Cloud-based video editing and post production company EditMate has expanded its team with the appointment of Jane Ormsby to commercial director.

Prior to this role, Ormsby was a managing trustee of Refugee Aid New Zealand after working as a media director at Young & Shand in 2014 to 2015.

EditMate was founded by Rachel King and Scott Stratford and it now has offices in Boston and Auckland. Its clients include the International Travel College of New Zealand, Almond Breeze and Juicy Car Rentals.

It’s now looking to grow its Australian client base and expand into UK and Europe within the year.
